The Sopranos - The Bakery

This page is for my AFM project. I will go over the creative and mixing process.

Why I chose this project:

I chose this project from the Audio For Multimedia section of the course for my portfolio, I chose "The Sopranos" (1999) is one of my favourite shows of all time. A show that I have rewatched countless amounts of times, I also enjoy mixing videos so I thought that because I was given free reign on what I could recreate I would have a better grasp on how the scene should sound atmospherically, that I would with any other from any other show. I also think I have produced an excellent quality product with good attention to detail to each sound queue within the scene, with my recreation, I hope that this project should suffice at an HNC level.

Task Criteria

I was tasked with creating a post production of a video clip from a movie, television program or a scene from a video game with a minimum clip length of 3 minutes. You weren't allowed to use original audio from the clip however I have used the original dialog within the scene as I was allowed, I used the colleges sound library and I have gathered some royalty free sound effects from the Internet.

Planning the soundscape

After researching and deciding on which clip to use, I have rewatched the show a plethora of times I so had a better grasp of what sound effects would be suitable for the scene. I downloaded the video from Youtube and I put it into Ableton to start, I opened SoundQ and started browsing for suitable sounds that might aid me starting to begin my recreation, I immediately had a rough idea on how I would start adding what sound effects I could use, for example I searched for a ticket being dispensed and a bell for the door opening. From that point I made a started creating the soundstage and finishing the project until I was satisfied with the end result.

How I designed each scene

Christophers Entrance:

The introduction scene within my audio for multimedia project was compiled using browsing SoundQ's audio library I had found some suitable footstep samples and cut each one individually so they would link up with the video, for the door opening at the beginning, I found a sample of a coffee shop door opening with an old bell included in the sample which I thought was perfect I paired this with a recording of a microwave door slamming shut. In the scene Christopher takes a ticket for this place in the queue, I made the sound effects using two samples, a plastic cash register closing shut with recording of a metro ticket being dispensed. When the cashier rings the bell I found two samples I thought were pretty on point, I used a recording of a string light switch on and another bell sample from the doors one.

Christophers Patience wears thin:

In the second section of the clip I had create the background ambience so I gathered multiple recorded samples from SoundQ. To create the ambience I used a recording of a quiet day in New York City, I reduced the gain and created an EQ for all my ambience elements the EQ cuts out high and low end frequencies and lowers the mid frequencies in order to emulate the effect of being outside instead of like it was inside the building. During the scene where Christopher has to wait, in the original audio there are cars passing by so I applied panning from left to right and use EQ Preset I made for the outside ambience, I also made use of my sends channels by using reverb and automation when it applies a wet signal Christopher taps his finger onto the glass and immediately cutting off the reverb after.

Christopher's patience runs out

For this scene I used automation and EQ for when the door opens and I layered my footstep samples for when Gino enters the Bakery it was also happy with three sound effects that I layered up to make for when Christopher flips the sign over I have found a metal sheet getting whacked on SoundQ I also used an old suitcase latch opening for when Christopher pulls out his gun also lined his footsteps and I applied reverb from my send track when Chris shoots the gun, I also found paper box sound effects and paper crumpling for when the cashier is frantically putting the pastries in the box.

End Scene

The ending scene was simple enough to make as it was relatively short and there wasn't much happening in the scene, curated my sound effects and lined it up with the audio I made use of my send tracks and I used automation to apply a slight amount of reverb when Christopher drops the box on the pool table after this we a character called Polly picks up the box and goes off screen I also found a sample which fitted him picking up the box, I found my footsteps the pool ball being hit sound and caught both of them up to align the audio.
